Course description: 
The role of technology and engineering in global development is explored through a combination of lectures, readings, case studies, and analysis of key technologies, including energy, information and communications technologies, water and healthcare.  Topics include a brief history and basic theories of international development and foreign aid, major government and non-government players, emerging alternative models (social entrepreneurship, microfinance, risk capital approaches), major and emerging players in social venture capital and philanthropy, the role of financial markets, environmental and resource considerations/sustainable development, technology diffusion models and appropriate technologies.

Course Schedule:  Mon

days 6-8 p.m. and Wednesdays 6-8 p.m.

Sessional dates of appointment
: January 1 – April 30, 2026

Stipend
:$12,930 inclusive of vacation pay

Qualifications
: Ph.D. or equivalent experience in the area of global development and technology – the role and use of engineering and technology in addressing the needs of the “base of the pyramid” populations in low and medium income countries.  Important elements include current practices and projects across a range of engineering areas such as structures, sanitation, biotechnology, other health technologies, clean water, food and agriculture,.   The ability through personal experience and/or the use of business school case materials and other written materials to describe current projects being developed.  Understanding of the key players – multilateral institutions like the UN and the World Bank, government aid organizations, key foundations, alternative funding models.  Must understand the concepts of entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship, business models, value chains, sustainability, frugal innovation, appropriate technologies, needs assessment.  Previous experience teaching a similar course is highly desirable, as is conducting research in the field.

Duties
: T
he lecturer will help prepare for and deliver
12 weeks of lectures and tutorials; set assignments and term work assessments and final assessment as appropriate; collate and submit marks; handle petitions after final marks have been submitted; communicating with students both inside and outside of class times.   Preparation of a deferred examination may also be required.
