What are Visas and Work Permits?

Firstly, here is an explanation of what a visa, a work permit and immigration actually is.
- A visa is an official authorization appended to a passport, permitting entry into and travel within a particular country or region.
- A work permit is a generic term for a legal authorization, which allows a person to take employment. It is most often used in reference to instances where a person is given permission to work in a country where one does not hold citizenship,
- Immigration is the act of immigrating; the passing or coming into a country for the purpose of permanent residence.
It will depend on how long you want to go for, why you want to go and certain other factors as to which of the visas you must apply for.

Information

The United Kingdom offers a range of immigration categories. The type of UK Visa for which you should apply will depend on the purpose of your entry to the UK or reason for continued stay in the UK.

UK Visas - The Points Based System

•Tier 1 Visas
Migrants with a Tier 1 General visa can continue to work but can no longer extend their visa. This scheme is also now closed to new applicants. The primary Tier 1 routes that are available to new applications are the Tier 1 Investor visa and the Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa.

To contact Skillclear about the "Investor" visa, CLICK HERE.

•Tier 2 Work Visas
The Tier 2 category is the replacement for the old Work Permit scheme, including Tier 2 General (this is the primary category for non-EEA workers to be sponsored by a UK employer), Tier 2 Intra-Company Transfers (ICT), Sportspersons and Ministers of Religion.

You need a Certificate of Sponsorship (offer of employment) from the UK employer before you can apply for your Tier 2 Visa.

For employers wishing to register for a Tier 2 Sponsorship Licence, CLICK HERE.

•Tier 4 Student Visas
The Tier 4 Visa category is the replacement for the previous Student Visa category, allowing individuals to study in the UK. After successful completion of studies you may be able to switch to a Tier 2 General visa if you can obtain sponsorship from a UK employer.

To make an enquiry about this type of visa, CLICK HERE.

•Tier 5 Visas - Youth Mobility (Working Holidays)
Tier 5 Visas (Youth Mobility) replaced the previous Working Holiday Visa and allow for up to 2 years working in the UK for those between the ages of 18 and 30 from qualifying countries.

Skillclear can also help if you need to bring your family or dependants to the UK, perhaps to join you after you have gained your UK Visa and settled in the UK. You can also find further information on Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and British Citizenship on the web site.

Employers must apply for work permits, not the employee and they must prove that you are the right person for the job. The Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) are responsible for immigration control and consider applications for permission to stay in the country and becoming a British citizen. When considering immigration to the UK, their website will help you to understand your rights and responsibilities in all respects!
