What is the role of the lawyer?
Your role may include some of the following activities:-
- Interpreting laws, rulings, regulations for businesses and individuals;
- Advising clients throughout a case on their position of their legal rights and obligations;
- Putting together all of the information for a case before a hearing;
- Attending court proceedings for a client and presenting cases to judges and juries;
- Understanding and being able to explain general legal advice;
- Researching and gathering evidence to formulate defence or legal actions. ;
- Analysing possible outcomes of a case;
- Developing strategies and arguments in preparation for cases;
- Prepare legal documents such as, wills, deeds, leases, contracts etc;
- Negotiate settlements of certain disputes;
- Supervision of legal assistants;
- Act as a trustee, guardian or agent for individuals or businesses;
- Involvement in admin and management items.

What are the entry requirements?
There is a lot of hard studying to become a lawyer and it needs to start early on. Five GCSE’s and two A Levels would be needed to get onto a University course. If you have not studied Law at University, there are conversion courses available (Graduate Diploma in Law or the Common Profession Examination). If you have attended University and gained a Degree then to become a lawyer you need to take the Bar Professional Training Course for Barristers or the Legal Practice Course for Solicitors.

What could I earn?
Salaries vary greatly depending on who you are employed by, where you are working, what you are specialising in so it is difficult to pinpoint a figure for a lawyer. It is one of the highest paying graduate professions with salaries starting at around £35,000.
How many hours a week would I work?
You would be hired on a normal 35-40 hour week as most jobs but you would be expected to work much longer hours and be expected to work overtime and out of office on regular occasions.
What career progression is there?
Once you are a lawyer there are many routes to progress. You can become a prosecutor, government counsel, corporate in-house counsel, administrative law judge, judge, arbitrator or law professor. There are also non-legal jobs which many individuals with a legal background move onto, for example, politician, corporate executive etc.
It is common to specialise into an area as a lawyer e.g. employment law or property law. Some lawyers who work in law firms may want to switch to work in private practice in the legal team and vice versa.
