Teaching assistants often work alongside a teacher in a classroom of children. They will support the teacher in either primary or secondary schools and assist with teaching the subject and managing behaviour. It is a highly rewarding career that can lead to other opportunities in teaching.

 

What do teaching assistants do?


Your role will likely include some of the following:
  • Providing support to children with whatever subject it is;
  • Providing extra help to those children that need it;
  • Helping to develop learning programs, activities and adapting material appropriately;
  • Motivating and encouraging students;
  • Correcting work;
  • Reading to children;
  • Preparing the classroom ready for teaching and tidying away after;
  • Participating in meetings outside of classroom teaching;
  • Helping with school events, outings and activities outside of the classroom.

What are the entry requirements?


Individual schools and the LEA decide which qualifications and experiences they would like the candidate to have. By checking locally advertised jobs, you could get a feel for what kind they require.

Qualifications in something related to childcare is useful but if you have enough experience with working with children and you have the right personality, it may be possible to start work without a qualification. Volunteering in local schools is a great way to get experience..

What could I earn?


On average a teaching assistant will earn around £15,000 - £16,000 but this will vary depending on where you live and what school you apply to.


How many hours a week would I work?


Teaching assistants will work normal school hours from Monday to Friday, term-time only. It is common that you would work part time in such a role. It is expected that you may need to work before or after school sometimes to get extra work done and there may be training days.


Is there training for a training assistant?


When you are working as a training assistant you will be required to finish your induction training.

You can work towards several qualifications at a school or college or as an apprentice. Depending on what level you are at you would choose from one of the following:
  • Level 3 Award for support of teaching and learning in schools
  • Level 3 Certificate of teaching and learning support in schools
  • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for teaching and learning in schools
