Aid workers focus on the needs of people and communities in the developing world. There is a great deal of correspondence with developing countries in order to achieve a long-term way to solve a problem. Development projects include, for example, education, sanitation, health, agriculture and business development.

There is a wide range of work in this area, including working with the government, in health care, education, gender equality, disaster prevention, infrastructure, the economy, livelihoods, human rights, forced migration, security, conflict and the environment.

Fields of work could be for example, fundraising, management, training, consulting, research, medicine, engineering and more.

 

The actual role of an aid worker includes what?


You are likely to get involved in some of the following activities:
  • Rapid assessments in emergencies;
  • Implement emergency activities and monitor their effectiveness;
  • Put together reports, recommendations and proposals for emergency interventions;
  • Keep in touch with the United Nations agencies, government officials & colleagues;
  • Management/recruitment of local staff;
  • Organize induction, training and support for volunteers and other humanitarian workers;
  • Implement, monitor and ensure strict adherence to security/safety procedures;
  • Ensure compliance with appropriate national and international procedures, policies and regulations.

What are the entry requirements?


It is not possible to enter into this field without a degree. Usually social sciences or something related is the desired degree however if you have studied in: - social policies, economics, human rights, health-related.

It is also important to have some work experience under your belt.

What could I earn?

Roles in the UK and within non-governmental organisations offer around £19,000-£25,000. For roles abroad, wages can range from around £21,000-£37,000 depending on experience, skills, the organisation, the Country and other aspects.


How many hours a week would I work?


Roles that are based in the UK and based around normal office hours (35-40 hours a week). Working abroad can involve long unsociable hours and are usually for set time periods (from around 3 months to 3 years).


Is there career progression as an aid worker?


Graduates working in the public sector will be offered a structured career path. It is common to find individuals moving between agencies to gain new experience rather than moving within an organisation.

It is possible to start of as an administrator and then progress to a co-ordinator and then a manager. Unless you have a great deal of experience, it is unlikely you will be offered an International placement.

Once you have a lot of experience you may decide to work in consultancy.

Is there typical training?


Charities and organisations not in the private sector generally do not have the funds for formal training. Larger non-governmental organisations will however have in-house training and encourage external training. There are many companies who provide short courses for development.
