The role of a groundskeeper or gardener is to maintain parks and to participate in ground maintenance. The working environment can include extreme temperatures, a dirty environment and very active work using lifts and the transport of heavy objects.

 

What is the role of a groundskeeper?


Generally, you would be expected to do some of the following activities:
  • Be responsible for the upkeep of the property and grounds;
  • Clean and remove rubbish;
  • Report unusual activity in the grounds;
  • Be responsible for care and maintenance of the equipment and supplies;
  • Be prepared to keep up to date with relevant policies and laws;
  • Use heavy or dangerous machines or equipment;
  • Use hand tools including shovels, rakes, saws, hedge trimmers etc;
  • Use fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides;
  • Be responsible for the appearance of the grounds, plants etc.

Are there specific entry requirements?


Being a groundskeeper requires at least one years of experience in maintenance or you can have the equivalent combination of expertise that may include education. Often there are no formal educational requirements unless you are applying to a higher level groundskeeper role and then you may need a landscaping or horticultural degree.


Skills and attributes for the job....


A groundskeeper must be able to:
  • Read two and three syllable words and numbers;
  • Basic maths skills - addings and subtracting;
  • Common sense and understanding basic instruction;
  • Physical skills are important - ability to walk, balance, climb, crouch, crawl;
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds easily;
  • Good vision and hearing including long distance and peripheral;
  • Must be familiar with common tools and equipment.

How much do groundskeepers earn?


 The average salary for groundskeepers to maintain and landscape is about £16,000.


What are the typical working hours?


Generally you would be working in daylight hours on a standard 8 hour or so day but it would depend who and where you were working and what requirements they had.


And what career progression is there?


If you are to start off as a groundskeeper with little experience, you could move to being a supervisor and managing a team of people on larger grounds. There are other roles in agriculture if you were keen to specialise, for example, biology or botany. If you were keen to manage your own team, you could set up your own landscaping company.


What training would I expect to do?


You would receive on the job training as a groundskeeper. If you do not already have a degree, you could also work towards to a degree in landscaping or horticulture should you wish to move into a more senior groundskeeper position.
