You are NEW to the office, what should you remember?
|
|
A job in the civilian world is very different to that in the military and the way you conduct yourself in front of others is also different. Here are a few things to think about……
- Avoid acronyms from the military as your colleague will have NO idea what you are talking about
- Language – less swearing – this may be offensive to new colleagues
- Avoid any kind of discriminatory talk that may offend other sexes, cultures, races etc
- Dress code for the workplace – make sure it is appropriate. If a factory, it will be much less formal than say going for an office related job. Do your research
- Err on the side of caution to begin with and observe others in the first few days to see what is seen as reasonable behaviour
- Try to be modest and avoid army talk about how many people you managed etc
- Get on with your job and don’t try to overly impress your boss/superiors
- Keep your mobile phone on silent and avoid personal calls unless it is urgent
- Be respectful to others even if you do not get on with them/dislike them
